The Petőfi Literary Fund announced its new "literary export" grants

The calls for tender intended to strengthen the foreign presence of classic and contemporary Hungarian literary authors. Provide opportunities for native and international participants from eight different fields.

The Petőfi Literary Fund announced its new grants for the second half of 2022 supporting the creation of domestic and foreign launches for Hungarian literary translation. The eight types of grants in the portfolio formed two years ago contribute with their diversity to the introduction of Hungarian literary works and authors in foreign countries and in foreign languages.

The new grants address both native and foreign applicants: besides Hungarian scientific translators, literary authors and literateurs, the addressees include theatres, troupes and translators of Hungarian literature to foreign languages as well.

Three of the eight calls for tender facilitate the increase in the number of sample translations. For the sample translation grants, the application of career entrant and experienced translators as well as Hungarian publishers and agencies are welcomed.

The translation of larger parts of a classic or contemporary literary work facilitates the access to publishers for emerging or experienced translators. Furthermore, Hungarian publishers and agencies can expand their portfolio with sample translations, making their international activity more effective and successful.

The Petőfi Literary Fund not only aids the international introduction of texts but that of authors as well. The Mutasd magad! (Show yourself!) – literary transfer grant helps Hungarian language authors, translators, literateurs and those engaged in cultural activity who have been invited to a foreign event, festival, book launch, author-reader meeting, theatre premiere or scientific conference and those who take part in the foreign popularization of Hungarian literature with their own activity or performance. Accommodating to the practice of such events’ organization, applications are welcome from the time of the announcement to 10 December. The evaluation is continuous.

The translation and production grants aim to support foreign publishers with the translation and production of Hungarian authors’ literary works. The Petőfi Literary Fund considers it especially important to aid the publishing of illustrated books (storybooks, photo albums, cartoons etc.). For this reason, applicants submitting such works are provided a separate category.

An exciting element of the grant system encourages the foreign language presentation of the jewels of contemporary and classic Hungarian dramas. Hungarian based but foreign language theatres, troupes and theatrical groups applying with translations of Hungarian plays undertake the task of performing the translated play.

The grant named "Dienes Valéria academic prose translation grant" supports high quality scientific translation activity from a foreign language to Hungarian. The Agency awaits the submissions of talented young translators. The applicant undertakes the task of translating a foreign language work not yet published in Hungarian that they like and find important. The work in question may be a contemporary or classic non-fiction technical article, an excerpt or a complete work from any field of science.
