Translators’ House

Translators’ House

Partner organisation

Opened in 1998, the Hungarian Translators’ House hosts foreign translators who translate works of Hungarian literature, humanities and social sciences into various languages. The House enables translators to work in a Hungarian-speaking environment, meet contemporary Hungarian writers and fellow literary translators, and acquaint themselves with the latest works of Hungarian literature.

The Translators’ House has been founded and is operated by the Hungarian Translators’ House Foundation.

The House is located in Balatonfüred, one of the prettiest towns with rich cultural heritage on the northern shore of Lake Balaton, 125 km to the southwest of Budapest. The lovingly renovated ‘Lipták Villa’, built over a hundred years ago, is open all year round and can accommodate up to six guests. Translators staying at the House have a library of 6,000 volumes, computers, WiFi, a printer and a photocopier at their disposal. The House has a fully equipped modern kitchen. Works by some of Hungary’s most significant contemporary artists adorn the building.

Translators can apply to the Hungarian Translators’ House Foundation for funded residencies. Depending on the length of the work to be translated, residencies will last 2, 4, 6 or 8 weeks and come with a bursary to cover living expenses. Applications are considered by the Foundation’s five-member Board of Trustees on a rolling basis. There is no application form; applicants must submit a work plan, a list of publications, a CV and a publisher’s contract or a letter of intent. The value of the bursary is HUF 180,000 per month. The Translators’ House also hosts translation workshops and smaller events.

The Hungarian Translators’ House Foundation is a member of the network of European literary translation centres (RECIT - Réseau Européen des Centres Internationaux de Traducteurs littéraires), https://www.re-cit.org
