Spotlight on women at the London Book Fair

The London Book Fair (LBF) is one of the world's largest and most significant trade fairs for booksellers and publishers. This year, it took place from April 18 to 20, 2023, at the Olympia London halls. The 35th edition of the fair attracted publishers, book agents, rights traders and prominent representatives from the book industry, literary circles and the academic and scientific community from all around the world. Hungary was represented by the Petőfi Literary Fund (PLF) with its own booth, showcasing a series of publications introducing contemporary Hungarian literature and featuring three presentations.

On April 20 at the Liszt Institute in London, the anthology titled "Shelter under the Sun" was presented, which includes English translations of poems by three Hungarian poets. Borbála Kulin, Krisztina Rita Molnár and Zita Izsó are exciting female voices in contemporary Hungarian poetry, each approaching femininity in a different way: Molnár playfully, Kulin by examining the relationship between the female body and love, and Izsó from the perspective of traumas. All three poets, as well as the editor and translator of the anthology Gábor Gyukics participated in the event.

Immediately following the presentation of the anthology, Tibor Fischer, a Hungarian-born author who was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 1993, and Katalin Ladik, a Hungarian avant-garde poet and performance artist who received the LennonOno Peace Award, took the stage. Both are authors for The Continental Literary Magazine and engaged in a discussion about the future, youth, and beauty, accompanied by editor-in-chief Sándor Jászberényi.

On Saturday evening, April 22, the presentation of Krisztina Tóth's short story collection titled "Vonalkód" (Barcode) took place, also at the Liszt Institute in London. Each of the 15 short stories is narrated by a young, anonymous female protagonist. Whether they revolve around childhood acquaintances, school camps and trips or love and romantic disappointment, all of them are set in the declining socialist era of Hungary. The translator of the collection, Peter Sherwood received the prestigious English PEN Translation Award for this book last year.

All three events were highly successful, with full houses. Among the most touching moments of the Women Poets' Evening were the author readings. There was even a viewer who had to leave the room temporarily due to being deeply moved. The most memorable moments of the TCLM presentation were undoubtedly Katalin Ladik's vocal poetry performances. The audience responded very well to this truly extraordinary act and the performances were a huge success. The presentation of "Barcode" was made unforgettable by the author herself through her personal, sincere confessions and directness, captivating the audience.

 Fókuszban a nők a Londoni Könyvvásáron

A Petőfi Kulturális Ügynökség saját standdal és könyvbemutatókkal képviselte a magyar irodalmat a Londoni Könyvvásáron.

A London BOOK Fair (LBF) a világ egyik legnagyobb és legfontosabb könyvkereskedelmi és kiadói rendezvénye, amely idén 2023. április 18-20. között zajlott az Olympia London csarnokaiban. Az idén 35. alkalommal megrendezett vásárra a világ minden tájáról érkeztek kiadók, könyvügynökök, jogkereskedők, a könyvszakma, az irodalmi és az egyetemi-tudományos élet prominens képviselői. Magyarországot a Petőfi Kulturális Ügynökség (PKÜ) képviselte saját standdal, a kortárs magyar irodalmat bemutató kiadványsorozatával és három bemutatóval.

Április 20-án a londoni Liszt Intézetben mutatták be a Shelter under the Sun című kortárs versantológiát, melyben három magyar költő verseinek angol fordítása szerepel. Kulin Borbála, Molnár Krisztina Rita és Izsó Zita izgalmas női hangok a mai magyar lírában, a három különböző karakter más-más módon közelíti meg a nőiséget: Molnár játékosan, Kulin a női test és a szerelem kapcsolatát vizsgálva, míg Izsó a traumák felől. Az esten mindhárom költő, valamint a kötet szerkesztője és fordítója, Gyukics Gábor is részt vett.

Közvetlenül a versantológia bemutatója után lépett színpadra a magyar származású, 1993-ban Man Booker-díjra jelölt Tibor Fischer és a magyar avantgárd költő és performanszművész, a LennonOno-békedíjas Ladik Katalin. Mindketten a The Continental Literary Magazine szerzői, akik a főszerkesztő, Jászberényi Sándor társaságában a jövőről, a fiatalság és szépség témájáról beszélgettek.

Április 22-én, szombat este Tóth Krisztina Vonalkód (Barcode) című novelláskötetének bemutatójára került sor, szintén a londoni Liszt Intézetben. A 15 novella mindegyike egy-egy történet egy fiatal, névtelen női elbeszélőtől. Akár gyermekkori ismeretségekről, iskolai táborokról és kirándulásokról, akár szerelemről és szerelmi csalódásról szólnak, mindegyik Magyarország hanyatlófélben lévő szocialista korszakának közegében játszódik. A kötet fordítója, Peter Sherwood e könyvvel tavaly elnyerte az angol PEN kiemelt fordítási ösztöndíját.

Mindhárom rendezvény osztatlan sikert aratott, teltház előtt zajlott. A Női költői est legmeghatóbb pillanatai közé tartoztak a szerzői felolvasások, volt olyan néző, akinek egy rövidebb időre még a termet is el kellett hagynia, annyira meghatódott. A TCLM bemutató egyértelműen legemlékezetesebb pillanatai Ladik Katalin hangköltészeti előadásai voltak, a nézőközönség nagyon jól reagált az egyértelműen nem mindennapi előadásra, hatalmas sikert arattak a performance-ok. A Barcode bemutatóját pedig az írónő maga tette felejthetetlenné személyes, őszinte vallomásai és közvetlensége elbűvölte a nézőket.
