Hungarian Literature Translation Funding Program for Publishing Houses

Magyar Kultúráért Alapítvány (Foundation for Hungarian Culture) was established to support cultural and artistic activities, including the translation and publication of Hungarian literature into foreign languages. Petőfi Cultural Agency Nonprofit Private Limited Company Limited by Shares (hereinafter: Petőfi Cultural Agency) acting on behalf of Magyar Kultúráért Alapítvány has been funding publishers who intend to publish Hungarian literature in foreign language translation. Based on the practice of the previous years, we intend to cover the translation, publication, and marketing costs of up to 6500 EUR/project.

The exact amount of the financial support depends on the length and type of the work, its esteem and canonical position within Hungarian literature, the credentials of the commissioned translator and the publishing costs. The financial support to be given is decided by an independent, professional jury consisting of representatives of esteemed Hungarian literary, scholarly, and cultural institutions:

• Magyar Könyvkiadók és Könyvterjesztők Egyesülete (Hungarian Publishers and Booksellers Association)
• Magyar Írószövetség (Hungarian Writers' Association)
• Magyar Műfordítók Egyesülete (Hungarian Association of Literary Translators)
• Magyar Művészeti Akadémia (Hungarian Academy of Arts)
• Petőfi Kulturális Ügynökség (Petőfi Cultural Agency)

In 2024 Magyar Kultúráért Alapítvány is surveying proposals for translation projects sent until 15th July and in the second semester until 30th November.

When sending a proposal of your intended translation project, please consider the following:

• Magyar Kultúráért Alapítvány intends to financially support projects aimed at the translation and publication of entire books.
• Magyar Kultúráért Alapítvány intends to financially support translation and publication projects in the following genres: literature (prose, poetry, drama), nonfiction, literature for children and young adults. We are especially happy to support projects aimed at publishing contemporary or classic Hungarian literature as well as translation projects into English, German, French and Spanish, or the V4 countries (Czechia, Poland, Slovakia).
• Magyar Kultúráért Alapítvány’s intends to support exclusively: translation costs, production costs (printing, typesetting, design) and promotion costs.

Submit your declaration of intent and introduce your project by filling out the online data request form. Please note, that the submission is complete by sending the bibliographic data; short presentation of author; short presentation of the book; short presentation of the translator, and publisher (most recent catalog) as attachments to applications@plf.hu. indicated the publishing house's  name in the subject line of the letter.
